TPWDhastakenimmediateactiontosecurealldeeratthefacilityandplanstoconductadditionalinvestigationsforCWD,accordingtotherelease.Inaddition,otherbreedingfacilitiesthatreceiveddeerfromthisfacilityorshippeddeertothisfacilityduringthelastfiveyearsareundermovementrestrictionsandcannotmoveorreleasedeeratthistime. Thediseasealsogoesby"zombiedeerdisease"duetotheeffectsthediseasehasonthebrainandnervoussystemin deer.SymptomsofCWDdonotappearforseveralyearsandincludestaggering,lackofcoordination,abnormalposture,drooling,confusion,excessivethirst,andsevereweightloss.Theresultisalwaysfatal,accordingtoTPWD.  "Earlydetectionandcontainmentremaincriticalstrategiesinoureffortstohelpmitigatetheriskoffurtherspreadofthisdisease,"CarterSmith,TPWDexecutivedirector,statedintherelease."ThereistoomuchatstateacrossTexastodootherwise." Thereisnoevidencethediseasecanbenaturallytransmittedtohumans,livestock,orpets.However,theCentersforDiseaseControlandPreventionrecommendsnotconsumingmeatfrominfectedanimals.
