NATION'Zombie'deerdisease:Statesissuenewwarnings,confirmationsofchronicwastingdiseaseRyanW.MillerAshleyMayUSATODAYAsdeerhuntingseasonsacrossthenationramp up,wildlifeofficialsareissuingnewwarningsandconfirmationsofchronicwastingdisease,the brain-wastinganimaldiseaseinformallycalled"zombie"deerdisease.Everystatediffersonhuntingregulationsandhowtheyhandlemanagementofchronicwastingdisease,butinrecentweeks,wildlifeofficialsinstatesincluding Nevada,Iowa,Wyoming,PennsylvaniaandTennesseehaveeitherwarnedhuntersaboutthediseasetopreventitsspreadtotheirstateorconfirmednewcases.AccordingtotheCentersforDiseaseControlandPrevention,atleast277countiesin24stateshavereportedchronicwastingdiseasein free-rangingdeer,elkorothercervidsasofAugust.Therearenovaccinesortreatmentsavailableforthedisease,whichisalwaysfatal. Andwhilenocaseshavebeenreportedinhumanstodate,someresearchersworryitposesarisktohumans.Here'swhatyouneedtoknowaboutchronicwastingdiseaseandhowtopreventit:Whatexactlyischronicwastingdisease?CWDisatypeofpriondisease calledtransmissiblespongiformencephalopathies.Thediseaseaffectsdeer'sbrainsandspinalcordsthroughabnormalprionproteinsthatdamagenormalprionproteins,theCDCsaid.Thecellscollectandeventuallyburst,leavingbehindmicroscopicemptyspacesinthebrainmatterthatgiveita“spongy”look,accordingtotheNorthCarolinaWildlifeCommission.Symptoms,whichcantakemorethanayeartodevelop,includedrasticweightloss,lackofcoordination,listlessness,drooling,excessivethirstorurination,droopingears,lackoffearofpeopleandaggression.Howdoeschronicwastingdiseasespread?Indeer,CWDspreadsthroughcontaminatedbodilyfluids,tissue,drinkingwaterandfood,theCDCsays. Thediseasewasfirstidentifiedincaptivedeerin thelate1960sinColoradoandinwilddeerin1981,theCDCsaid.Accordingtothehealthagency,CWDcouldbemorewidespreadthan24states."OnceCWDisestablishedinanarea,theriskcanremainforalongtimeintheenvironment.Theaffectedareasarelikelytocontinuetoexpand,"the CDCsaysonitswebsite.Isinfectedmeatsafetoeat?SomeinfectiousdiseaseexpertsworrythatifCWDweretoinfecthumans,consuminginfectedmeatwouldbethepathway."Itisprobablethathumancasesofchronicwastingdiseaseassociatedwithconsumptionwithcontaminatedmeatwillbedocumentedintheyearsahead,"MichaelOsterholm,directoroftheCenterforInfectiousDiseaseResearchandPolicyattheUniversityofMinnesota,toldstatelawmakersearlierthisyear.TheCDCalsosays eatinginfecteddeermeatwouldbethemostlikelywayforittospreadtopeople.More:In2005,about200peopleate‘zombie’deermeat.Here’swhathappenedAbout7,000to15,000animalsinfectedwithCWDareeateneachyear,andthatnumbercouldriseby20% annually,accordingtotheAllianceforPublicWildlife,whichOsterholmcitedinhistestimony.Scientistscan'tsayforsurethatCWDwillcrossoverandinfecthumans,butastimegoesonandmoreinfectedmeatisconsumed,thelikelihoodincreases,Osterholmsaid."It'slikeathrowatthegeneticroulettetable,"hesaid.Don'ttouchroadkillPeopleshouldn'thandleoreatmeatfromdeadanimals.Also,nevershootandhandleadeerorelkthatisactingstrangely.
