NATO’sforcefulstanceonChinamarkedadiplomaticvictoryforUSPresidentJoeBiden,whohadurgedhisfellowleaderstostanduptoChina’sabsoluteruleandgrowingmilitarymight–afundamentalchangeoffocusforanalliancecreatedtodefendEuropefromtheSovietUnionduringtheColdWar. Inanangryresponse,theChinesemissiontotheEuropeanUnioncalledforNATOto“viewChina’sdevelopmentrationally,stopexaggeratingvariousformsof‘Chinathreattheory’andnottouseChina’slegitimateinterestsandlegalrightsasexcusesformanipulatinggrouppolitics(while)artificiallycreatingconfrontations”. NATO’saccusations“slandered”China’speacefuldevelopment,misjudgedtheinternationalsituation,andrepresenteda“continuationoftheColdWarmentality”,thestatementadded. “Wewillnotposea‘systemicchallenge’toanyone,butifanyonewantstoposea‘systemicchallenge’tous,wewillnotremainindifferent.” ThetenseexchangecomesamidgrowingglobalconcernaboutChina’strade,technologyandhumanrightspolicies.Overtheweekend,themeetingoftheG7nationsintheUKalsochastisedBeijingforitstreatmentoftheUighurminorityinitsXinjiangregion,calledforHongKongtokeepahighdegreeofautonomy,anddemandedafullinvestigationoftheoriginsofthecoronavirus,whichwasfirstrecordedinthecentralChinesecityofWuhaninlate2019. MilitaryfrictionshavemeanwhileincreasedbetweenChinaandrivalpowersoverthepastyear,includingintheTaiwanstraits,theSouthChinaSea,andontheChina-IndiaborderintheHimalayas. TheChinesemissiontotheEUsaidBeijingwas“committedtoadefensepolicythatisdefensiveinnature”andcalleditspursuitofdefenceandmilitarymodernisation“justified,reasonable,openandtransparent”. “Chinaiscommittedtopeacefuldevelopment,”thestatementsaid.“Wewillnevergiveupourrighttoupholdpeace,andwillstandfirmindefendingoursovereignty,securityanddevelopmentinterests.WewillfollowverycloselyNATO’sstrategicadjustmentanditspolicyadjustmenttowardsChina.” NATOshouldstoptakingChina’s“legitimateinterestsandrightsasanexcusetomanipulateblocpolitics,createconfrontationandfuelgeopoliticalconfrontation,”itcontinued. “Instead,NATOshoulddevotemoreofitsenergytopromotingdialogueandcooperationandmakingmoreeffortsthataretrulyconducivetoupholdinginternationalandregionalsecurityandstability,”itadded.
