OPINION / EDITORIAL ‘Chinathreattheory’anideologicaldisorderoftheUS,UK:GlobalTimeseditorial ByGlobalTimesPublished:Dec02,202112:13AM Illustration:LiuRui/GTUSSecretaryoftheAirForceFrankKendallsaidonTuesdaythatChinaandtheUSareengagedinanarmsrace,inresponsetoChina'smovetodevelophypersonicweapons.WhatwewouldliketosayisthatthisisonlytheUS'opinionandthatChinahasnointentionofengaginginanarmsracewiththeUS,asit'sagainsttheinterestsoftheChinesepeopleandwillnotbesupportedbythem.AllmilitaryresearchanddevelopmentChinahasconductedarededicatedtodefendingagainstpotentialrisksandpromotingnationalsecurity.Wedon'thavethewillingnesstooverwhelmtheUS'militarycapabilityinmattersthatdon'tinvolveChina.TheUK'sMI6chiefRichardMoorealsosaidonTuesdaythatChinaisthe"singlegreatestpriority"forhisspyagencyasChina"increasinglyfavorsboldanddecisiveactionparticularlyonnationalsecuritygrounds."HesaidChinais"anauthoritarianstatewithdifferentvalues"whichwas"exportingtechnologythatenablesawebofauthoritariancontrolaroundtheworld."MoorealsoallegedthatChina'soverconfidencehasputBeijingatriskof"miscalculation."AsoneofthefurthestEuropeancountryfromChina,theUKhasgonefrompromotinga"goldenage"ofChina-UKrelationsseveralyearsagotoseeingChinaasthebiggestsecurityissuetoday.Suchachangeisbynomeansunnaturalandabnormal.SomethinghystericalmusthavesignificantlyhappenedintheUK,justliketheoutbreakofCOVID-19underthemutationfromDeltatoOmicronvariant.TherehavealwaysbeenforcesintheUSandtheUKtosellthe"Chinathreattheory."Buttoday,thiskindoftalkiscloselytiedtotheirstrategytowardChina,creatingamorerealisticanddestructiveforce.The"Chinathreattheory"iscookeduponthebasisofseveralfalsepremisesandjudgments.Asarisingpower,Chinahasbeenasmoderateaspossibleontheglobalstage.Andsofar,ithasnotadoptedgunboatdiplomacyorforcedanycountrytomakeparticularchoiceswithChina'smilitarypower.However,theUS,theUK,andotherWesterncountriesdon'tacceptChina'srise.Instead,theybelievethatastrongChinawillpursuehegemonyastheyhavealwaysbeendoing.SuchanopinionleadstothedeepeningofbiasesagainstChina.Westerncountries,especiallytheUSandtheUK,havetoabandontheirstereotypicalvaluesof"Westerncentrism"andeven"Whitesupremacy."Instead,theyshouldrespectChina'srighttodevelopintoamajorpowerasasuper-populouscountry.TheyalsoneedtorespectChina'srighttodefenditslegitimateinterestsandvalues.TheWestshouldnottreattheiroverwhelminginterestsascheesethatcannotbetouchedoradjusted.Itcannottrytoliveoffitspastgainsintheeraofglobalization.Itneedstobeopentochangesintheworldasprosperityanddeclineneverlast. ThecentralgoalofChina'snationalsecurityistodefendthecountry'scoreinterestsandensurethatitsrighttodevelopisnotoppressedordeprived.AndworldhegemonyisthepursuitofneithertheChineseleadershipnortheChinesepeople.Therefore,ChinawillneverengageinanarmsraceagainsttheUSforglobaldominanceorinsubversiveactivitiesaroundtheworld.ButwewillresolutelycontinuebuildingthecapabilitytomilitarilydefeattheUSintheregionswhereChina'scoreinterestslie.WewilldosotogatherresourcestoweakentheUSanditsallies'operationstojeopardizeChina'sinterests.Thisisassimpleandclearasitis.The"Chinathreattheory"hasevolvedfromanormalandnaturalconcernintoanoverwhelmingviewonChinaaswellasonthe21stcenturyincountriesliketheUSandtheUK.ThisisaprofoundbetrayaloftheWestagainstthespirittoseektruthfromfacts,andanideologicaldisorderagainstChina-relatedissues.ThegeneralstrategicthinkingoftheUSandtheWestwillbecomemoreimpulsiveandradicaliftheycannotabandontheviciousspiralofthe"Chinathreattheory." Toconclude,wewanttosaythefollowing:IftheUShastoomuchmoney,itshouldengageinanarmsracewithitself.IftheMI6hasemployedtoomanyhands,giveeachofthemamagnifyingglasstosearchforChina's"evilinfiltration"intotheUKandtheworld.AsforChina,itwill,asitalwaysdoes,keepitsowndevelopmentpace,stickingtoitsgoalofmodernization.AsaChinesepoemsays:Amidmonkeys'howlalongtheriverbanks,myskiffhastraveledathousandmiles.
