Saturday,1June2013 ImagiNationswargaming AfewyearsagoIboughttheBlackPowderrulebookbyWarlordGamesasitwasenvogueattheclubandseemedlikeagoodsetofrules.UnfortunatelythetypeofgamesplayedattheclubandthefactthattheywerealwaysACW,putmeofsaidrulestothepointthatIsoldthemonwithinayear.FastforwardafewyearsandmygoodfriendKeithdevelopedhisownsetofrulesfortheSevenYearsWarthathadalotofsimilarmechanicstoBlackPowder.Iwasveryimpressedwiththerulesandthefungamesthattheyproduced,helpedinnosmallmeasurebyKeith'sknowledgeoftheperiod,hiswonderful'oldschool'gamestableandthespiritwithinwhichthegameswereplayed. AtaroundthesametimeSamMustafareleasedMaurice,asetofrulesforusewithinthe18thCentury.Againtheseruleswereboughtandafewgamesplayed,allofwhichwereveryenjoyable,onceagainhelpedbymyregulargamingchumsandtheirattitudetoplayingthegameintherightspirit.Howeveronethingandanotherledtotheserulesbeingshelvedasgamingtimewas(andcontinuestobe)limited.Duetotherulesmechanicsthesewereunsuitableforsologames,somethingwhichItrytolookforinaruleset. SofastforwardanotheryearandmymindonceagainturnedtotheBlackPowderera,foravarietyofreasons.Ihadawholehostof2mmfiguresbasedforMaurice,alongwithtwoAWIarmies,butwasreallyafterasetofrulessuitableforsoloplayaswellasstandardgameswithmyfriends.ForsomereasonmymindturnedonceagaintotheBlackPowderrules.HavingpromisedmyselfatthestartoftheyearthatIwouldnotbuyanynewrules,inthespaceofaweekortwoIhadboughtDBA2.2followedbyBlackPowder! ThelatterpurchasewasImustadmit'researched'overafewweekssowasnotarashdecision,whichmaycomeasasuprisetothosethatknowme.SowhenthebookarrivedIhopedthatmypurchasehadnotonceagainbeeninvain.IamhappytoreportthattheruleswereallthatIhopedtheywouldbe,ifnotmore.IaskedmyselfwhyIsoldtherulesinthefirstplace,andIcanonlyreferyoubacktotheexperiencesIhadattheclub.  Sointypicalwargamesbutterflymodemymindturnedbacktomy2mmSYWand10mmAWIforces.Bothperiodswouldprovideforverydifferentstylesofgamesduetoavarietyoffactors,suchasthelackofcavalryseenintheAWI.HoweverIwantedtofleshoutthelatterespeciallyassomenewunitshadbeenaddedtothePendrakenrangesinceIboughtmyinitialforces.Butgiventhatcavalrywaslittleusedinthistheatre,thequestionwashowtofitthemintomyforce? TheanswercameintheformofthewholeImagiNationsperiod,onethatwas'created'byCharlesSGrantandPeterYounginthedimanddistantpastofthe1960sIbelieve.InasenseIhadalreadydabbledinthisformofgamingwiththewhole'AVeryBritishCivilWar'concept,onethatisverypopularatthepresenttime.Inspiration,ifanywereneeded,wasprovidedbythelikesofTheGentlemanWarmongerBlogandtheMauriceCampaignBlog,bothofwhichshowthejoysoftheImagiNationsworld.Therearemany,manyothersoutthere,buttheseareamongmyfavourites. SonowitisacaseofcomingupwithmyownImagiNationsforces.InspiredbyTheGentlemanWarmongerblog,I'mnowlookingateitherforcesbasedinandaroundBristolaspermyownAVBCWunits,orgoingbacktomyrootsinCambridgeshirewiththeEnglishCivilWarasmyinspiration.AnotheroptionistofindsomethinginMittelEuropaandthemyriadofsmallStates,BishopricsandPrincipalitiesthatexistedataroundthistime.OnethingisforsureandthatthatismyAWIforceswillformthecoreofbotharmies,withadditionalunitsdbeingaddedpurelyforImagiNationuse.HighonthelistareunitsfromthePendrakenLeagueofAugsburgrange,astheyarewonderfullysculptedbyClibinariumwhoisresponsiblefortheAWIrangeandsowillhaveacohesivelooktothem.OnethoughtistousethemforunitsbasedinNorfolk,asthosethathavelivedinEastAngliaknowthatthisisthecountythattimeforgot,givingaconvenientexcuseforthedifferencesinuniform! Sonowitisacaseofgettingdowntosomeplanningforfuturepurchases,background'history',unitnamesetc.HopefullyIwillbeabletoupdateprogressonsomeideasinthenearfuture.That'sassumingthatIdon'tgetdistractedbyanother'period'beforethen!
