With the release of the 2021 report, the Selig Center issued new estimates of minority buying power for the U.S. and all 50 states. Today’stopnewsfromtheUniversityofGeorgia CampusNewsBusiness&EconomyScience&TechnologyArtsHealth&WellnessSociety&CultureGeorgiaImpact UGAeconomisthaschartedtheexplosivegrowthofHispanic,AfricanAmericanandAsianAmericanmarketssince1990 Inthe30yearssincetheUniversityofGeorgia’sSeligCenterforEconomicGrowthlauncheditsMulticulturalEconomyreport,thepopulationoftheUnitedStateshasgrownmoreraciallyandethnicallydiverseandsohasthenation’sbuyingpower. Withthereleaseofthe2021report,theSeligCenterissuednewestimatesofminoritybuyingpowerfortheU.S.andall50states.Thetakeaway:AsianAmericans,AfricanAmericansandHispanicswieldformidableeconomicclout.Andcompaniescannolongertakeaone-size-fits-allapproachtomarketingconsumergoodsandservices. “Thebuyingpowerestimatesanddifferencesinspendingbyraceand/orethnicitysuggestthatasthenation’sconsumermarketbecomesmorediverse,advertising,productsandmediamustbetailoredtoeachmarketsegment,”saidJeffHumphreys,directoroftheSeligCenterandauthoroftheMulticulturalEconomyreport. ApublicserviceandoutreachunitoftheTerryCollegeofBusiness,theSeligCenterhasproducedaMulticulturalEconomyreporteachyearsince1990,exceptfor2020whendatadisruptionsfollowingtheCOVID-19pandemicdelayedproduction.The161-pagereportwithsupportingdatatablesisavailabletothepublicatwww.terry.uga.edu/selig. BasedondataprovidedbytheU.S.CensusBureau,theU.S.BureauofEconomicAnalysisandothersources,theSeligCenterestimatesthebuyingpowerforAfricanAmerican,AsianAmericanandNativeAmericanconsumers,whichhasexplodedoverthepast30years,upfrom$458billionin1990to$3trillionin2020. Inadditiontoincreasingsheersize,theircombinedshareofthenation’stotalbuyingpowerincreasedfrom10.6%in1990to17.2%in2020. Hispanicbuyingpoweralsohasgrownsubstantiallyoverthelast30years,from$213billionin1990to$1.9trillionin2020.Hispanicbuyingpoweraccountedfor11.1%ofU.S.buyingpowerin2020,upfromonly5%in1990. ThediversificationoftheU.S.consumermarkethasbeendrivenbymanyfactors,includingpopulationgrowth,favorabledemographics,entrepreneurialactivityandrisinglevelsofeducationalattainment,Humphreyssaid. “Amajorfactorunderpinningthegrowthofthenation’sminoritymarketsisthatAfricanAmericans,AsiansandHispanicscontinuetobecomemorehighlyeducated,whichallowsproportionallymoreBlacks,AsiansandHispanicstoenteroccupationswithhigheraveragesalaries.” TotalU.S.buyingpower Thereportdefinesconsumerbuyingpowerastotalincomeaftertaxes.ThecombinedbuyingpowerofU.S.consumersgrewfrom$11.3trillionto$17.5trillionbetween2010and2020,orby55%. Overthesametimeperiod,AsianAmericanbuyingpowergrewby111%;thebuyingpowerforthoseofHispanicethnicitygrewby87%,NativeAmericanbuyingpowergrewby67%,andAfricanAmericanbuyingpowergrewby61%. Hispanicmarketgrowth TheHispanicmarketisthelargestminoritymarketintheU.S.andcontinuestoexpandbriskly.Thegroup’sspendingpowergrewto$1.9trillionin2020,anincreaseof87%from2010. In2020,the10stateswiththelargestHispanicmarkets,inorder,areCalifornia($506billion),Texas($361billion),Florida($208billion),NewYork($139billion),NewJersey($70billion),Illinois($68billion),Arizona($63billion),Colorado($40billion),NewMexico($32billion)andWashington($31billion). ThestateswiththefastestgrowthintheHispanicmarketbetween2010-2020areNorthDakota(206%),SouthDakota(136%),Montana(133%),Idaho(121%),DistrictofColumbia(119%),NewHampshire(118%),Oregon(115%),Washington(114%),Massachusetts(113%)andPennsylvania(112%). TheMulticulturalEconomyreportalsoincludesnationalmarketestimatesforsevenofthelargestHispanicsubgroupsintheUnitedStates. PersonsofMexicanoriginconstitutearethelargestsubgroupandaccountfor56%ofHispanicbuyingpowerintheU.S. AsianAmericanmarketgrowth Almost21millionAsianAmericans,includingNativeHawaiiansandPacificIslanders,represent6.3%oftheU.S.population.Thegroup’sbuyingpowerof$1.3trillionislargerthantheannualeconomicGDPofallbut13countries. In2020,the10stateswiththelargestAsianconsumermarketsareCalifornia($439billion),NewYork($109billion),Texas($100billion),NewJersey($70billion),Washington($58billion),Illinois($49billion),Virginia($39billion),Florida($37billion),Mas­sachusetts($36billion)andHawaii($36billion). ThestateswiththefastestgrowthintheAsianmarketbetween2010-2020areWashington(174%),SouthDakota(164%),Utah(157%),Vermont(154%),Indiana(146%),Montana(145%),Texas(153%),Oregon(142%),NorthCarolina(142%)andGeorgia(138%). Thereportprovidesdataon17subgroupsofU.S.Asianconsumers,suchasChinese,IndiansandFilipinos.Themarket’sdiversityisbothastrengthandachallengetomarketers,Humphreyssaid. AfricanAmericanmarketgrowth In2020,AfricanAmericaneconomiccloutenergizedtheU.S.consumermarketasneverbefore. ThebuyingpowerofAfricanAmericansroseto$1.6trillion,or9%ofthenation’stotalbuyingpower.  In2020,the10stateswiththelarg­estAfricanAmericanmarketsareTexas($149billion),NewYork($141billion),Georgia($118billion),Califor­nia($118billion),Florida($116billion),Maryland($86billion),NorthCarolina($75billion),Virginia($67billion),Il­linois($63billion)andNewJersey($57billion). ThestateswiththefastestgrowthinBlackbuyingpowerbetween2010-2020areNorthDakota(316%),SouthDakota(146%),Hawaii(113%),Idaho(109%),Washington(104%),NewHampshire(104%),Oregon(103%),Wyoming(103%),Arizona(103%)andNevada(101%). NativeAmericanmarketgrowth TheSeligCenterprojectsthatthenation’sNativeAmericanbuyingpowerwillrisefrom$84billionin2010to$140billionin2020.Between2010and2020,NativeAmericanbuyingpowergrewby67%. In2020,the10stateswiththelargestNativeAmericanmarketsareCalifornia($25billion),Oklahoma($13billion),Texas($12billion),Arizona($9billion),NewYork($7billion),NewMexico($6billion),Washington($5billion),Florida($5billion),NorthCarolina($5bil­lion)andAlaska($4billion). ThestateswiththefastestgrowthintheNativeAmericanbuyingpowerbetween1990and2020areUtah(104%),Idaho(89%),Washington(87%),RhodeIsland(87%),Colo­rado(86%),Florida(86%),Arizona(84%),Nebraska(84%),Oregon(83%)andTennessee(80%). Notablefacts The$1.3trillionAsianAmericanmarketintheU.S.islargerthantheeconomiesofallbut13countriesaroundtheworld.ItisslightlylargerthanthegrossdomesticproductofSpainandslightlysmallerthantheGDPofAustralia. In2020,AsianIndiansaccountfor29percentofU.S.Asianbuyingpower,or$381billion. In2020,HispanicbuyingpowerintheU.S.reached$1.9trillion,whichislargerthantheGDPofItalyandslightlysmallerthantheGDPofFrance. From2010-2020,NorthDakotasawthefastestgrowthinAfricanAmerican(316%)andHispanic(206%)buyingpower. From2010-2020,WashingtonandSouthDakotasawthefastestgrowthinAsianbuyingpower,174%and164%respectively.
