Explanations[edit] Splitperceptionexplanation[edit] Déjàvumayhappenifapersonexperiencedthecurrentsensoryexperiencetwicesuccessively.Thefirstinputexperienceisbrief,degraded,occluded,ordistracted.Immediatelyfollowingthat,thesecondperceptionmightbefamiliarbecausethepersonnaturallyrelatedittothefirstinput.Onepossibilitybehindthismechanismisthatthefirstinputexperienceinvolvesshallowprocessing,whichmeansthatonlysomesuperficialphysicalattributesareextractedfromthestimulus.[30] Memory-basedexplanation[edit] Implicitmemory Researchhasassociateddéjàvuexperienceswithgoodmemoryfunctions.[31]Recognitionmemoryenablespeopletorealizetheeventoractivitythattheyareexperiencinghashappenedbefore.Whenpeopleexperiencedéjàvu,theymayhavetheirrecognitionmemorytriggeredbycertainsituationswhichtheyhaveneverencountered.[17] Thesimilaritybetweenadéjà-vu-elicitingstimulusandanexisting,ornon-existingbutdifferent,memorytracemayleadtothesensationthataneventorexperiencecurrentlybeingexperiencedhasalreadybeenexperiencedinthepast.[23][32]Thus,encounteringsomethingthatevokestheimplicitassociationsofanexperienceorsensationthatcannotberememberedmayleadtodéjàvu.Inanefforttoreproducethesensationexperimentally,BanisterandZangwill(1941)[33][34]usedhypnosistogiveparticipantsposthypnoticamnesiaformaterialtheyhadalreadyseen.Whenthiswaslaterre-encountered,therestrictedactivationcausedthereafterbytheposthypnoticamnesiaresultedinthreeofthe10participantsreportingwhattheauthorstermed"paramnesias".
