ManyoftheparticipantshavegoneontointernshipsatWaltDisneyImagineering,andsomehaveevenbecomefull-timeImagineers.Theprogram’scontinuedsuccessinspiredaseparateversion,DisneyImagiNationsHongKongDesignCompetition,whichlaunchedin2011underthesponsorshipofHongKongDisneyland.Thisyear’scompetitionwasopentostudentsfrom18collegesanduniversitiesacrossHongKong,whotookonthechallengeofdesigningaDisney-inspiredentertainmentorrecreationalexperienceforacity—anywherearoundtheworld—thatmaybefarfromaDisneyparkorvacationdestination.Thewinningteamfor2018hailsfromChineseUniversityHongKong.Theirproject,Daydreamers,conceptualizedamassivemobilerobotthatwouldescortgueststodifferentdestinationsaroundtheworld,andwassingledoutforitsimaginativeconceptandelementsofsurprise.Inadditiontosixtoeightweeksofhands-onworkexperienceatHongKongDisneyland,thewinnersreceivedatriptoWaltDisneyImagineeringheadquartersinGlendale,California,wheretheyjoinedtheirU.S.counterpartstogobehind-the-scenes,andtomeetandnetworkwithImagineers. TeamsparticipatingintheU.S.-basedImaginationsDesignCompetitionwerechallengedtoselectanactualabandoned“ghosttown”fromanywhereintheworldandrevitalizeit,takingintoaccountthehistoricvalueofthesite,aswellasthetraditionsandcommunitiesoftheoriginalandsurroundingareas.Projectswerejudgedonavarietyofcriteria,includingmasteryofskillsandtalents,guestexperienceanddiversityandmarketperspective;andthejudgesalsolookedforteams’abilitytorecognizetheculturalnuancesoftheirselectedlocationsandtheirevaluationoftheirprojects’impactontheircommunities. Outofmorethan270teamswhosubmittedprojects,sixfinalistteamswereselectedtopresenttoImagineeringexecutivesandcompeteforawards. AteamfromSavannahCollegeofArtandDesigntooktophonorsforCaguaya,anexplorationcenterthatincorporatesstate-of-the-arttunnels,augmented-realitytechnologyandafullysubmersibleperformancespace,allbuiltaroundthesunkenruinsofthe17thcenturycityofPortRoyal. Thesecond-placeteam,alsofromSavanahCollegeofArtandDesign,presentedSpaceportHashima.ThedesigncallsfortherenovationofexistingbuildingsfromaformerJapaneseghosttown,tocreateathrivinginterplanetaryterminalsurroundedbyaworld-classluxurydestinationresortcompletewithmuseums,world-renownedrestaurantsandlivelynightlife,inadditiontoresearchanddevelopmentfacilities.
