Share: Search CCAHomeCCANews Apr22,2020 PleistocenePavilionbyLuSuiandZhiwen‘Vicky’Dong   TwostudentsinMiamiUniversity’sArchitecture+InteriorDesigndepartmentmadeittothesemifinalsofthe29thannualDisneyImaginationsCompetitionfortheirpaviliondesigninspiredbyalocalfossil.ImaginationsisadesigncompetitioncreatedandsponsoredbyWaltDisneyImagineeringwiththepurposeofseekingoutandnurturingthenextgenerationofdiverseImagineers.InteriorDesignmajorsLuSui(classof2021)andZhiwen‘Vicky’Dong(classof2022)electedtoteamupandenterthecompetition.The2020projectchallengedteamsto“createaniconicinstallationatthecontestants’owncampusorcitythatservedasaninspiration,honoredthepast,andwasavisionofthefuture.”InaprocesssimilartohowImagineersdeveloptheirproposals,thepairhadonlyamatterofweekslastOctobertodirecttheirartistic,technicalandcommunicationskillstodeliveraconcept.Theircompetitionentrydetailsthestorybehindthedesignandillustratestheuser/guestexperience.InspiredbyOxford’snaturalhistory,VickyandLuproposeda“PleistocenePavilion”tobelocatedinPefferParkonthesouthernedgeofMiamiUniversity’scampus.TheyenvisionedthepavilionasaplaceforMiamistudentsandOxfordresidentstocometogethertoappreciateandlearnaboutnature.Thepavilion’sform,basedonthepelecypodclamfossilsfoundintheparkandthroughouttheregion,honorsPleistoceneEpochglacialfossilsassymbolsoftheparkandtheregion.Asmallexhibitionspaceencourageslearningaboutnaturalhistoryandactiveparticipationincontemporaryconcernsofenvironmentalprotection.Onerenderingshowsthepavilion’srelationshiptotheenvironmentacrossallfourseasons.AnotherviewenvisionstheparkhostinganEarthDayfestival.TheteamlearnedinNovemberthattheirprojecthadbeenselectedbyDisneyImagineeringtoproceedtothesemifinalroundofjudgingbuthadtokeeptheirprojectunderwrapsuntilfinaljudgingwascomplete.Whiletheirprojectwasnotamongthesixfinalists,thestudentsareenthusiasticabouttheexperience.AsLuexplains,“theloveofDisneypromptedmetoparticipateinthiscompetition.Inthecompetition,IcanhavetheopportunitytousewhatIlearnedinclassandincreasemydesignexperience.”Vickyadds,“Ijoinedthiscompetitiontochallengemyselfandgetmoreexperiencesbeyondbasicclassworks.And,tomesometimes,challengesarechances.”Congratulationstothesesemifinalists!PleistocenePavilionbyLuSuiandZhiwen‘Vicky’Dong.TheprojectwasconceivedbytheMiamiUniversityDepartmentofArchitecture+InteriorDesignTeamandcreatedforthe2020WaltDisneyImagineering’sImaginationsDesignCompetition.ThisprojectisthesolepropertyofWaltDisneyImagineeringandallrightstousetheseideasareexclusivetoWaltDisneyImagineering.ThecompetitionisawayforstudentsandrecentgraduatestoshowcasetheirtalentsandforWaltDisneyImagineeringtoidentifynewtalent.
