TheuseoftheflaginTaiwanreflectsthecontroversybehinditssymbolism.AlthoughsupportersofTaiwanindependence,suchasformerPresidentChenShui-bian,willdisplayandsalutetheflagonformalofficialstateoccasions,itisneverseenatpoliticalralliesoftheDemocraticProgressiveParty.ThisisnotonlybecauseofitsassociationwithmainlandChinabutalsobecausetheflagcontainsdesignelementsoftheKMTpartyflag.Bycontrast,theROCflagisalwaysextremelyprominentatpoliticalralliesofthepan-Bluecoalition.Thisdifferenceextendstothecolorsseenattherallies.Ralliesofthepan-BluecoalitiongiveprominencetothecolorsoftheROCflag,withverylargeamountsofblueandsmalleramountsofred.Ralliesofindependence-leaningpartiesarefilledwithgreen,withnoblueorredatall. SomesupportersofTaiwanindependence,includingformerpresidentLeeTeng-hui,havecalledfortheabandonmentoftheflag,andthereareanumberofalternatedesignsforaspecificallyTaiwaneseflag.However,theprospectsforthisarenothighgiventhatchangingtheflagrequiresaconstitutionalamendment;thatthecurrentflaghasahugeamountofsupportamongpan-Bluesupportersandgrudgingacceptanceamongmoderateindependencesupporters;andbecausechangingtheflagmightcausepoliticaltensionwiththePRC.Duringthe2004ROClegislativeelections,itwasbrieflysuggestedthatifthepan-greencoalitionwontheelectionsthatitwouldforcetheKMTtochangethepartyemblemtobedifferentfromtheflag.Thisproposalgeneratedafewdaysofcontroversyandwasthenquicklyforgotten.
