AftertheJapanesesurrenderin1945,theROCgovernment(ledbytheChineseNationalistParty,orKMT)tookovertheBankofTaiwanandbeganissuingTaiwandollars,alsoknownasTaiwanNationalistYuan,throughtheBankofTaiwan.Thiscurrencyisnowreferredtoasthe"oldTaiwandollar."SevereinflationofthiscurrencyduringtheChineseCivilWarledtheBankofTaiwantoissuetheNewTaiwandollarin1949.AfterthelossofmainlandChinaintheChineseCivilWarbytheKMTanditssubsequentretreattoTaiwan,theBankofTaiwantookonamorecentralroleasthecentralbankoftheROCuntiltheCentralBankofChinawasreestablishedin1961.TheBankofTaiwanwasgovernedundertheTaiwanProvincialGovernmentuntil1998whengovernancewastransferredtotheROCFinanceMinistry.In2001theCentralBankofChinatookoverthetaskofissuingtheNewTaiwanDollar.
