Forthepastfewyears,DNVGLhasbeenworkingonpilotprojectswithseveralownersandflagadministrations,totestandgainacceptancefortheuseofelectroniccertificates.Thishasresultedinalmost50flagstateadministrationsalreadyhavinggrantedDNVGLtheauthoritytoissueelectronicstatutorycertificatesontheirbehalf,withmoreacceptancesexpectedinthenearfuture. Thewidespreaduseofelectroniccertificateswillresultinsignificantefficiencygainsforshipowners,charterers,regulatorsandcrew,cuttingdownadministrativeburdens,processingtimeanddocumenthandlingcosts,accordingtoDNVGL. “TheelectroniccertificateregimeofferedbyDNVGLhasprovideduswithauniqueadvantageinthecontemporarymarket,whereleveragefromdigitalizedhigh-endefficientworkprocessesplaysanintegralrole,” said MortenNygaard,FleetManager,TeekayOffshore,ownersofoneofthevesselsusedinthepilotprojects. CertificatesarepublishedonDNVGL’scustomerportalimmediatelyafteranonboardsurveyiscompleted,sothatallrelevantpartiescanaccessthelatestcertificatesfromanywhereintheworld.Theelectroniccertificatesaresecuredwithadigitalsignatureandauniquetrackingnumber(UTN)whichcanbecheckedonline,assuringtheirvalidityandauthenticity. “Therolloutofelectroniccertificatesisasignificantstepforwardinourpathwaytowardsmodernizingclassification.Electroniccertificateswillsmoothourcustomer’sinteractionswithclass,allowstakeholdersacrosstheindustrytocapturevaluefromdigitalization,andgiveusaplatformforfutureimprovements,” KnutØrbeck-Nilssen,CEOofDNVGL–Maritime,said.
