Thesymbolforakind-of-quantityisasingleletter(GreekorLatin),printedinitalic,withveryfewexceptions,forexample,pH.Foreachkind-of-quantity,thereisonlyonecoherentSIunit.However,thesameSIunitmaybeusedtoexpressthevaluesofquantitieswithdifferentkinds-of-quantity.Therefore,aunitcannotidentifythekind-of-quantity;e.g.,volumicmassandmassconcentrationusekg/L,soboththeunitandthekind-of-quantitymustbestated(seetheNPUformatabove).Thesymbolforaunitisrepresentedbyone,two,orthreeuprightlower-caseletters,exceptiftheunitistermedafteraperson;e.g.,AandKforampereandkelvin,respectively,andthespecialcaseofLforlitre.Thetermisstillwrittenwithaninitiallower-caseletter.Intheclinicallaboratory,inexpressionsofvolume,thelitreanditssubmultiplesarepreferredtocubicmetreanditssubmultiples.Thesystematictermforacomponentshouldnotbeabbreviated,becauseabbreviationsarenotinternationallyaccepted.IntheNPUformat,theinitialletterofthecomponentisacapitalletter,exceptforsomeprefixes;e.g.,T4shouldbereplacedbyThyroxineandα-Amylaseiscorrect.Bacteria,viruses,fungi,plants,andanimalsincludingparasitesshouldbedesignatedbytheirtaxonomicterm.Termsforgenera,species,andsubspeciesareprintedinitalic;termsforordersandfamilies,andforstrainsorraces,areprintedinromanscript;however,theIFCCdatabankusesromanscriptthroughoutforconvenience[11]:
