SaehanandRio Saehanstartedsellingthefirstwidely-availablemp3playerin1998;Riofollowedwithamoresuccessfulmodellaterthatyear.BythetimetheiPodwasintroducedin2001,themarketwasfloodedwithplayers.Threeyearslater,theiPodhadallbutatinyfractionofthemarkettoitself.UserslikedtheiPod'selegant,minimalistdesign,andsimplybeingasbigacompanyasApplewasahugehelp.Butmostimportantly,theiPodhadiTunes,andstartingin2003,theiTunesmusicstore.HoweverneataCreativeplayermighthavebeen,itwasn'tcompatiblewithiTunes.EvenforuserslookingforawaytoavoidAppleanditsnastyDRMsystem,owninganythingotherthananiPodwassimplyinconvenient.Ifyouaresellingaplatformforcontent,it'sincrediblydifficulttocompetewithsomeonewhocansellthatcontenttousersdirectly.Ifyoucan'tdothesame,getoutoftheway.
