Thedevelopmentcomesasawayofbridgingthegapspresentininternationalregulationsforsuchfuels,withtheexceptionofLNG,theclassificationsocietysaid. “Exceptforliquefiednaturalgas,currently,allgasesandlow-flashpointfuelsaresubjecttothe‘alternativedesignapproach’,whichmeansthattheymaybeusediftheirsafety,reliabilityanddependabilityofthesystemscanbeshowntobeequivalenttothoseachievedbynewandcomparableconventionallyfuelledmainandauxiliarymachinery,”DNVGLexplains. “Thiscanbeatime-consumingandcostlyprocessandmayimpedetheuptakeandexpansionofloweremissionalternativefuels.” Therulesandnotation arebasedonDNVGL’srulesforshipsusingLNGasfuelbutaccountforthedifferencesinpropertiesandphasesbetweenLPGandLNG. Theclassnotationcoversinternalcombustionengines,boilersandgasturbinesforbothgas-onlyanddual-fueloperations.Italsoincludesrequirementsfortheship’sfuelsupply,consideringallaspectsoftheinstallationfromthebunkeringconnectionuptoandincludingtheLPGconsumers(mainandauxiliaryengines,boilers,etc.). “Withthenewrulesandclassnotation,wewanttoofferownersinterestedinLPGastraightforwardpathtowardscompliancewith thealternativedesignapproachmandatedbytheIGFCode,”saidGeirDugstad, DirectorofShipClassification&TechnicalDirector atDNVGL–Maritime. “Asthefuelenvironmentwithinthemaritimeindustrybecomesmorediverse,itisessentialthatwecontinuetobroadentheenablingrulesandregulationtosupportthesenewchoices.” LPGasafuelcanloweravessel’semissionstoair,bothintermsofgreenhousegasesandotherpollutants.ItvirtuallyeliminatessulphuremissionsandreducesGHGoutputbyapproximately17percentcomparedtoburningHFOorMGO,DNVGLexplained. LPGcouldalsoactasabridgingfueltoammonia,asthematerialsusedforLPGtanksandsystemsis,inmostcases,suitableforammonia.Withadvancedplanning,theadjustmentsneededforaswitchtoammoniafromLPGcouldalsobeminimized,theclassificationsocietyadds. InAugust2019,BWLPGannouncedplanstoretrofitfourshipswithLPG-propelleddual-fuelengines.Themovehasbeendescribedbythecompanyasapioneeringstepinthedevelopmentofnext-generation,high-techgreenshipswithdual-fuelpropulsion. WithLPGpropulsion,BWLPGplanstoreduceitssulphuroxideemissionsbyupto97percent,allowingforfullcompliancewithallcurrentandfuturesulphuremissionsrequirements. Thismeanstheretrofittedships,whenoperatingonLPG,willgobeyondIMO’sglobal0.5%sulphuremissionscaptoalsobeinfullcompliancewithEmissionControlAreas(ECA)andSulphurEmissionControlAreas’(SECA)0.1%sulphurcap. DorianLPGisalsointerestedintheviabilityofLPGasanattractiveandcost-effectivealternativefuelthatiswidelyavailableandinherentlycompliantwiththeIMOmandate. In2018,thecompany teamedupwithHyundaiGlobalServicetostudytheretrofittingofenginesonboardtenofitsverylargegascarrierstouseLPGasfuel. TheinitiativefollowstheconclusionofastudyannouncedinSeptember2017byDorianLPGandtheAmericanBureauofShippingtoevaluatetheuseofLPGasamarinefuelinadvanceofthesulphurcap. GlobalenginemakerssuchasMANEnergySolutionalsosupporttheswitchtonaturalgasesasthefuelsofchoiceinglobalshippingasoneofthebestwaysofdecarbonizingtheindustry.
